Two Face Cocaine charges
Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced the unsealing of a two-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury sitting in Madison on November 9, 2012, charging Deward Johnson, 31, and Anthony Dawson, 40, both of Chicago, with conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute and possessing cocaine with intent to distribute.
If convicted, the defendants face a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum penalty of 40 years in federal prison on the conspiracy count, and a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on the possession count.
The indictment alleges that between December 2009 and December 10, 2010, Johnson, Dawson and Romaill Cox conspired to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and alleges that this conspiracy involves at least 500 grams of cocaine. Cox is not named as a defendant in the indictment and is presently serving an eight-year prison term for his role in the conspiracy.
The indictment also alleges that on December 10, 2010, Johnson and Dawson possessed cocaine with the intent to distribute it.
The charges against the defendants are the result of an investigation conducted by the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, Special Investigations Unit. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul W. Connell.
